Day 1 – December 23, 2010 – Piano

Start from the beginning

Piano with John

I put down my pen and walked into the community center located right behind me.  There were four tables situated in this small and warm place.  There was a piano at the back of the room.  I sat down and started eating Santa’s bag of candy while observing my surroundings.

After a few minutes, I asked the Oppenheimer Community Center Staff member Benny, if I could play the piano.  He nodded.  The song I always like to play on the piano is “Canon in D”.  Once I was finished playing, a man named John stood next to me and told me that he enjoyed that song.

I asked him if he knew how to play, he said yes.  He sat down and played.  I wished I had grabbed my camera and recorded this.  When he was done, I asked him what song he was playing.  He said he didn’t know and that his fingers just moved to certain keys.  I guess playing the piano to him was like brushing teeth to us.  We don’t really think too deeply about it, we just do it.  After that, John played another completely improvised song.  Simply amazing.
